Position Description: Guidance, Navigation and Control Engineer
About Zupt: Zupt is located in Houston, TX. We develop, manufacture and support a range of reliable, integrated survey and positioning solutions based around inertial navigation systems. Our core competencies include the development of complex integrated navigation systems that combine various inertial navigation technologies with many varied aiding observations to deliver practical solutions. We ensure that we understand what the customer want’s and when.
Our project timescales are months, not years. We do not work on mega projects. You will have visibility to the complete project and design process, not one very small component. We are a small company, which means you will be contributing to projects from day one. We have world class advisors and consultants working with us, but we need some competent help developing and delivering these complex, but practical solutions.
Primary duties include: system requirements capture and design resulting in system modeling and simulation, control algorithm development and data analysis. You will be responsible for our navigation algorithm implementation (working with third party consultants), test planning and procedure development, and hands-on-testing.
You will be required to generate requirements and create error budgets for all navigation system components from top level requirements.
You will travel to the field to test and work with customers when new capabilities are first introduced.
This position will work very closely with hardware and software engineers to implement timely, practical solutions.
Education & Experience Required:
We desire as many of the following skills as possible: (sorry – but we have to use some acronyms or we would not be engineers!)
Technical background must include academic and practical experience with probability and statistics, control systems, digital signal processing, Kalman filtering, and/or tracking loop theory (test in Matlab/Simulink – code in C, C++). You will have a solid understanding of the strap-down navigation equations as well as the error mechanism of inertial instruments.
Some hands on experience with various inertial sensors – aware of the pros and cons of these sensors - Gyro’s (RLG’s, FOG’s, MEMS, DTG etc.) and accels.
Experience operating and processing data from positioning systems and other sensors: GNSS/GPS, acoustic positioning systems, pressure transducers, etc.
Leadership (needs to be self-starter and take charge – you live and breathe this stuff)
Position requires a graduate degree in one of the following areas: G,N & C, Geomatics, Physics, Maths, Computer Science or Electronics including Navigation/Control Engineering.
Software experience and past experience with Matlab/Simulink, C, C++ is a must have. Some knowledge of real time embedded code would help.
Good oral and written communication skills are required as position involves working with a diversified team of experienced professionals and customers.
Willingness to travel as required to achieve business results. Genuine empathy with customer requirements, strong tendency to champion customer positions within Zupt.
