Remote Controlled Moon Dozer video

This informal education hands-on activity was featured as a side-line exhibit at the Great Moonbuggy Race in 2005 at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville, Alabama.

The main goal was to show students the concept of remote operation, and how it was possible crew members would have to operate robots and crawlers from a different location such as the Moon. Here, the container the radio-controlled toy is burying with simulated moon dirt could be a variety of facilities including power generators or habitats. The "regolith" as the dirt is technically named provides an excellent barrier for the dangerous space radiation that rains down on the surface of the Moon.

Fire in microgravity

Here's what happens to a candle flame in reduced gravity. Without the presence of "normal" gravity (1g), the buoyancy occurs in a different manner. Instead of heat rising, it expands in all directions, creating a round or spherical flame shape.

This is a video clip from the Space Fizix demonstrator, a demo that uses drop tower technology, and a wireless camera to capture the effects of fire, water, and magnetism in microgravity, or 'space.'
